Happy Birthday Maja!

My cat, Maja, turned 13 today! I’ve had her since she was about 3 months old, so it’s wild to realize she’s 13! She’s a lovely grey/black tabby with yellow-green eyes. When she was younger, the vets said she was a butterfly tabby, but I don’t see butterfly markings on her anymore.

The summer of 1999, I adopted Maja from the shelter in Tallahassee. She was so small and cute! She’s always had a lil nip out of her ear. The 1999-2000 school year at FSU, I finally had an apartment, a studio apartment, and could have a cat! I named Maja after looking in a small baby name book I bought (at the register of grocery store), Maja was under Maia as an alternative. Some vets have called her “Maia”, but I prefer it to be pronounced with a “ja” sound (English). Think Raja from Aladdin with an M instead of R. 😉

When she was young, she was a scardy kitty. She’d lay on my chest and whenever someone walked by my apartment, she’d jump up off my chest…leaving claw marks! She also used to use those claws to toss her toys way up into the air and jump after them. Oh, so cute.

Uh, right, just like this were her claw marks...lol.

Well, she also used those claws to scratch furniture that was not mine. So, I did the unthinkable (keep in mind I was young, too, 20 yrs old) and had her claws removed – all claws. Trust me, I will NEVER do this again. NEVER. (Any cat I get in the future will keep all their claws and I will figure out alternative ways to deal with their scratching). It took a year (give or take) before she was normal, but she’s never played the same since. And, she must stay indoors at all times, she has no way to defend herself if she got out.

Maja has been a really good cat. She has only been sick ONCE! She had like a kitty flu, but I had been afraid she at some dental floss, phew! She drools when she purrs, which is a bit gross, but I read it is drool, not snot! So, that’s good! She wags her tail different than most cats, it twitches when she’s happy! She used to be at the door when I’d come home from classes and welcome me like a lil doggie…it was so cute. She doesn’t do this anymore. She’s not quite as susceptible to cat nip as other cats, but she does like it and roll around in it. Her favorite toys have always been furry mice…she doesn’t play much anymore, but I bet if I got out a furry mouse, she would play for a little bit. She also doesn’t jump on the counters (its rare) or up on book shelves. And, she does not steal food!!! Her favorite places to sleep are on our bed, back of the couch, and my office chair.

See how she keeps clean!

So cute when she sleeps!

Maja got in, Parker was put in. LOL.

The bad thing with her is…if she feels too hungry…like was in one room too long, she comes out…eats fast, then goes to MY bed and throws up! Oooh, not cool kitty! LOL. Pete definitely thinks her drooling while purring, and then swinging her head around so the drool flies…is bad.

Maja has a sense of humor!

I’ve never put clothes on her, except a Christmas hat, or two. I have NEVER bathed her. I read if your cat keeps clean, and isn’t long-haired, you don’t have to. I know cats aren’t huge fans of water, so I decided to just let her do her cleaning thing, and she does a great job. When she doesn’t, I’ll know she’s sick and it’ll be time to take her to vets. I have bought her so many toys…I had to give some away! Of course, since she doesn’t have claws, I haven’t bought her any scratching posts.

Maja being 13, she’s doing pretty well all things considered. She’s not sick, she’s very agile and jumps high still. She’s got a bit of a belly though, but she is a house cat and an older one at that. I do think she’ll easily live to be 20 or beyond! So long as she continues to stay healthy! I plan to change her cat food to grain free once all the extra food I have is gone…its supposed to be closer to a cat’s natural diet (being one high in protein and no corn).

Happy Birthday Maja! My sweet tabby kitty, you are 13! I hope you enjoyed that Yellowfin Tuna and Shrimp breakfast I gave you, you deserved it (Uh, she sat there and ate the whole thing, so I do think she did)!

Enjoying her birthday meal!

  1. She is a cute cat for sure!!! Your vet said she may be a “butterfly cat” what is that?!? I have never heard of them. I too disagree with declawing a cat, I put these rubber shields that go over the nail of the cat so they can’t scratch the furniture. Hoosah isn’t that bad, but Tazzo our calico that passed away was HORRIBLE!!!! She ruined 2 or 3 sofas while we had her!!! If she could pluck one of her rubber nail shields off and do some damage she did and I hated it!!!! But that’s what you go through with kitty’s 🙂 Hoosah is like a puppy! Him and Johnny play fetch and they really play fight like dogs do, it’s so strange LOL

    • When the vet had said butterfly tabby, they meant her tabby markings were looking like butterfly wings. I am not sure they look like it now…she’s got more black on her than she did when younger. At least that’s what I think. I think my grandma had tried rubber shields, but her cats got them off. So she just put guards on the ends of her couches and deals. LOL. That’s so cute your cat plays fetch with Johnny! 🙂
