Jobs I Had Under 18

I started working young. Well, it’s true.I remember I wanted things that my parents wouldn’t buy, which was what sparked me getting a job right after my birthday when I turned 16, but I my first job was as a babysitter much younger!

I began babysitting at the age of 10 or 11 for my cousins and I also babysat my younger brother. Looking back, I am not sure at that age I should have been watching so many kids, I was uh, still a kid myself. Somehow we survived and really that’s what is important, right? Oh, how many was it? Well, 3 to 6 cousins at a time that I watched. All younger than me….yep, we survived! Yah!This job lasted a few years, I think, I really can’t recall. Once one of them got old enough to watch the others, I was no longer needed.

Sometime in middle school, I worked for a print shop (Pine Island Printing). I wonder was I 12 or 13, I don’t know. Not sure anymore how I got the job, I think perhaps I was walking by it and maybe I stopped in…anyway, I ended up answering phones for the guy that ran the print shop.

Then, I delivered the Pine Island paper on foot. Yes, on foot. My brother rode his bike, but I was too cool for that. LOL. Or whatever. This was middle school still…and I’d walk around a neighborhood across the street delivering the paper. I do not think this job lasted long, maybe a couple of months.

My next job, other than babysitting my brother for free, was working at Wendy’s! Oh, I was so excited to have this job! A bunch of younger people worked there, all around my age (I was 16, of course). I loved working there because I wasn’t at home, and I enjoyed “hanging” out with the people I worked with. I learned how to work as a cashier front and drive-thru, I made sandwiches, and did up the salad bar, and did food window, too. The only thing I did not do was the grill, but I could make fries, chicken, and potatoes! I did not like cleaning the bathrooms….or that I worked after I clocked out, to help. I did this because my ride was still working and like I said I liked the people there. O’well, lesson learned. Yes, I still like their food.

My senior year I had to switch jobs. My ride started working different hours and my mom didn’t like driving me (it was rather far from home). So, I got a job at Winn Dixie on Pine Island and worked there as a cashier until I graduated. Wasn’t the best environment for me, but it was a job, and paid me more than Wendy’s had.

And, those were the jobs I had under the age of 18 years old. What jobs did you have under the age of 18?

Best Job Search Sites for Columbia, SC

Not that it has yet to be fruitful for me, but I have found some great sites to use when job hunting in Columbia, SC (some work for the state and some for all over the US).

SC Works – South Carolina jobs all over the state, not just in Columbia. Set the search for Columbia. Sometimes if you apply on here, and try to apply on the government site…it will let you know you already applied.

SC Government Jobs – It is a government job search site, but I found it wasn’t very helpful when I tried to search outside of Columbia. Maybe I was using it wrong?

Richland County Site – This lists a lot of jobs that you have to go bring a resume in to only for Richland County. A lot of interesting jobs on this site. I never actually used it, but looked a few times.

Lexington County Site – Only Lexington County jobs. You can apply online and it lets you know when jobs are filled.

University of SC Job Site – USC positions only. It is very good about letting you know where your application is, and when you do not qualify or the job is filled.

Monster.com – Amazing site for job searching. Obviously not just for Columbia, SC, but nationally.

Careerbuilder.com – Another pretty good job search site, national, not just for Columbia.

Linkedin.com – A good site to look nationally for jobs in your field that are sometimes not found on other sites for all over the US. Can’t say a lot came up for Columbia area, sometimes NC, though.

Well, those are all the sites I’ve used to job search. I am sure when the job market is good they work great for people, but I sure haven’t had luck in the Columbia area. O’well. Something will come along soon, I just know it!

Dry Idea Review & Giveaway

As a Purex Insider, we do not just test out Purex products, we also get to try out others, like this month I’m trying the Dry Idea roll-on deodorant they sent me. I was excited to try a new deodorant for free and especially excited that they sent me free product coupons to do a giveaway!

I have been a particular deodorant girl for MANY years, I usually just try their new products. This past week, I’ve been giving the Dry Idea roll-on a go (I have NEVER tried this brand before). The product I received is the New! Hypo-Allergenic Protection Dry Idea AdvancedDry(TM) roll-on. Product stats:

  • 24 Hr Protection
  • Fast drying MicroCotton(TM) Formula
  • Hypo-allergenic
  • Contains Vitamin E
  • Available in 3.25 oz

My Dry Idea AdvancedDry(TM) roll-on experience:

It’s easy to use. Just shake and roll-on. It does dry fast, I think by the time I had applied to both underarms and put the deodorant down, I was dry! This product has not irritated me or bothered me. It provided wetness protection with all day wear. On light to normal activity days, it provides good odor protection. However, on work-out days or out in the heat too long, I did not feel it held up its odor protection. I still felt dry, though.

Now for the giveaway!

Biltmore Estate Visit

Last Sunday, we checked out of the Hilton and went to grab some lunch. We decided to try Copper Canyon Grill. The food was good, not spectacular, and HUGE portions! So filling! I had to take half my sandwich home and couldn’t eat all the house salad. And, then we were off……..to the Biltmore Estate! I’ve wanted to go see this place for years…not sure how many…so just years.

Huge House Salad.

Huge “steak” sandwich.

The estate is huge…quite a drive in and out! Well, we parked in Lot A, and caught the bus to the actual mansion (uh castle w/o fortification if you ask me). Upon approach…wow. Breathtaking…huge. The bus driver announced to us (not word for word), “..the Biltmore estate has 255 rooms and 43 bathrooms, none of which you can use, oh and you can’t take pictures inside. You are free to take all the pictures you like outside.” (Awe, geez, thanks).

Map of the whole Biltmore Estate.

I took some out front pics before we went inside the mansion. If you aren’t familiar, the Biltmore Estate was built by George W. Vanderbilt. It took 6 years to complete, being completed in 1895. Mr. Vanderbilt was 33 years old when he moved in…as a bachelor! He spent 9 years in the house, until he died of complications associated with his appendectomy. In total, they said the house was lived in 15 or 16 years…the rest of the time….it has been shown to the public, but still owned by the Vanderbilts (specifically by William A.V. Cecil, G.W. Vanderbilt’s grandson).

Front of the Biltmore.

Me in front of the Biltmore.

Once inside, we wound our way through the house, following the path they made for us. You could easily get lost in here…it is kept fairly cool with FANS! It was ridiculous inside. I mean ridiculous. The ceilings were so high! The decorations were delightfully elaborate. The rooms were outrageously huge! It really is ridiculously lovely. Highlights inside were his & her bedrooms connected by the largest breakfast room I’ve ever seen. And, the bedrooms made the beds look small or maybe they were small? Also, this house had a bowling alley, a swimming pool (and men’s and women’s changing rooms), servants quarters…oh my. It has the biggest built out basement you’ve ever seen…and so many many bedrooms.

Since, I could not take pictures inside the estate, err mansion, err castle…I bought a book of postcards that had a lot of pictures in it (damn them). I also bought a shotglass (my main collection item when visiting places) and the picture they took of us inside the house.

Then we went on to tour the gardens. They are quite extensive and I only saw the rose garden and one other.

Me in the Rose Garden.

Then we drove over to Antler Village, so I could do the free wine tasting (included with the price of admission to the Biltmore Estate – which isn’t cheap). They had a lot of wines to taste, and some for cost. I tried about 8 or 9 free wine tastings, and then went over and tried 3 cost tastings (only $8 for the 3). After all was said and done, I bought a bottle of the Biltmore wine, and then we headed back home.

Biltmore Estate Blanc de Noir, Biltmore Estate Sec, Biltmore Pas de Deux.

Entrance to the Winery (not the one we used, tho).

Biltmore Limited Release Chenin Blanc.

It’s a lovely place, but a bit pricey if you ask me. I was lucky to find a discount code for $17 off each ticket (they also had a deal if you bought 7 days in advance to save the same, but we were under 7 days when I was purchasing). If you can swing it and are in Asheville, I do recommend taking a day to tour it all. We only went a half day, and I would have liked to take a little more time. O’well!

All in all a very nice weekend in Asheville, NC!

Buca di Beppo & Brave

On Thursday, Pete and I went up to Charlotte, NC to see Brave the night before it opened as part of a D23 & Disney See It First promotion. Since, I am a D23 member, I was able to get in on this.

We headed up to Charlotte and went to eat at Buca di Beppo. I had a gift card for the place that I found out I’ve had since 2007!!! So, since there was one close to the theater, I figured perfect time to use. Then, on Wednesday, I received a $10 off $20 coupon from their eClub. Score!

Interior of Buca di Beppo

More interior of Buca di Beppo

I’ve eaten at Buca di Beppo a few times, but never memorable. Probably why we never used the gift card in Orlando (or too lazy to go to the FL Mall). Pete did not remember the one time we went with a couple of friends. So the waitress was happy to tell us about it. Family style means, I pick the food. LOL. Below is our food….all good.

Stuffed Mushrooms – so good.

Bruschetta – had to ask for some mozzarella – and that made it perfecto!

Chicken Saltimbocca. Very good.

After we went to the mall to waste some time (still too early)…then we headed to the AMC where the free viewing was. We got there slightly more than an hour early, and not many others there. Just before 6pm, they let us line up…then they TOOK OUR CELL PHONES AND CAMERAS! I felt so naked! They had us put them in little brown bags and gave us tickets to get them back after. It was scary but, we survived.

Posters at the theater.

We got good seats, the theater ended up packed, and that theater was so hot. It being hot was my only complaint, well and the old man behind me kicking my chair and ME (grr). The kids didn’t bother me at all…the lil girl next to me got scared tho (she was so cute and had a purse full of lip gloss – lol). Brave was beautiful. Merida is a great not your average princess…and the movie is not quite what one expects. I also really want one of those little bears! Like really, so cute! And, if you are a sap like me, totally expect to shed some tears a few times during this animated movie. I recommend it, especially if you enjoy Disney/Pixar movies or animations. Also, I saw someone else say that the movie would be great for a mother and daughter, and I do agree. Before the movie there was a cute animated short called La Luna….oh I want one of those light up stars, too. At first I wasn’t into it, but it was pretty cute. After the movie in the credits, there is a nice little thing. When you see it, you’ll know.

From IMDB.

After the movie, we got our electronics back and headed back to Columbia. I turned the AC way up to cool down! Ahhhhh!

Asheville, Eating, and Hilton

Last Tuesday, we decided to go to Asheville, NC. I had a free Hilton hotel stay (I mentioned in this blog post) to use by 9/1/12, so figured I’d try for the weekend. Fairly easy, and hotel booked for Saturday night! I had never been to Asheville and I knew ONE thing I wanted to do…(but I’ll talk about that in another post). Packed up Friday night…and headed to Asheville on Saturday morning.

Mountains appearing!

When we got to Asheville, we found a parking garage in downtown and walked around. There was an art’s festival going on, so we wondered through that…and I took pictures of the buildings.

Then, we both got hungry…and walked around trying to find a place we both wanted to eat. We settled on Curate, a tapas place. It was great! Good service and good food (except for the last thing that we didn’t need anyway, we were both full, but I ate all the cheese off it). I also had a gift card I was able to use to take $25 off the meal! Woo!

Jamon Iberico Fermin, pan con tomate, and patatas bravas.

Did not like, and only ate the cheese off this Canoli de something.

After Curate, we headed to our hotel, the Hilton Asheville Biltmore Park. It looked really modern and new. Quick check in and then up to our room. It was nice and clean…and I love blue. Rather spacious…but only a mini-fridge and small coffee pot (a microwave would have been nice). All in all the room was nice and we were staying there for free. One minor thing….the bed was not as comfy as our bed at home.

After a nap, got ready for dinner at the Corner Kitchen! I had looked for restaurants online, so I could use some restaurant.com money I had. Reviews were good…so I got for this one and made a reservation online. We get to the restaurant and OMGolly it’s so cute! All the buildings were the same and this area was incredibly beautiful and cute.

Upstairs was empty, only people downstairs after 9pm.

We ordered drinks…and then were brought out a cute sample (they bring to everyone). It was tasty! When our meals came…they were delicious. My steak was so good, the potatoes were yummy…and even the deep-fried onions! Pete loved his whole meal, and had me try his salmon (I have never liked any salmon I’ve tried, even at Victoria & Albert’s)…and seriously it was TASTY! I decided to order dessert, while Pete did not. I went with gingersnap crusted key lime pie. It was good, but wondered if I should have got the souffle or the bread pudding…o’well! Since, I got that restaurant.com gift card free….I got $25 off our meal! Woo!

Tasting of their pulled pork. Very good.

My chargrilled NY Strip Steak with Smashed Potatoes, Tobacco Onions, and Bleu Cheese Butter. OMG. So good.

Pete’s Dill Pesto Scottish Salmon on Fingerling Potato Salad with Balsamic Asparagus and Fried Parsnips.

Amy’s Own Key Lime Tart – a neighborhood recipe in a Gingersnap Crust Garnished with Devonshire Cream (I want a bowl of that cream to dip strawberries in).

Satisfied with dinner smiles or something! ;)

We went back to the hotel and enjoyed the hot tub and pool. And, then….oddly got addicted to watching Pawn Stars for hours! Like seriously! Hah. I couldn’t even fall asleep at first, I just closed my eyes and was still talking to the show…”Just sell it yourself, you’d make more money!” LOL.

All in all it was a very tasty, good day….hehe. Asheville is pretty and the free hotel stay was wonderful!
